What began as a small cultural initiative has grown into a vibrant community where generations gather to celebrate, share, and carry Serbian tradition forward.
Foundation
How We Began and Where We’re Headed
Founded in 2010, Opančići began with a simple but meaningful goal: to create a place where Serbian culture could thrive far from home. What started as a shared passion for folklore, music, language, and community has grown into a vibrant cultural organization that brings people together across the Washington, DC area.
Over the years, Opančići has organized performances, festivals, fundraisers, and cultural events that celebrate the richness of Serbian heritage while strengthening connections within the diaspora. From local community gatherings and folklore performances to appearances at the National Cherry Blossom Festival, NBA halftime shows at Capital One Arena, cultural celebrations on the National Mall, the Jefferson Memorial, and the grounds of the United States Capitol, as well as events hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia and our annual Saint Sava Ball, our mission has remained the same: to create meaningful experiences that connect people through culture, tradition, and shared identity.

Our Journey
A group of families gathered with a shared purpose: to keep Serbian traditions alive for their children. What began as informal gatherings in living rooms would become something much larger.

Yes. Opančići is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All donations are tax deductible. Your support directly funds programs, costumes, instruments, cultural events, and operational costs.
